Faithfully His. Faithfully yours.

I want to be so committed to my relationship with God and so sure of His love for me that it spills out in every relationship I have – faithfully, lovingly, and lavishly.

Mark well that God doesn’t miss a move you make;
 He’s aware of every step you take… Proverbs 5:21 (MSG)

The fifth chapter of Proverbs is a loud and clear warning about the results of adultery and the call to faithfulness in marriage.

Relationships aren’t always easy and people aren’t always fabulous. That includes us – but, we tend to overlook that a little easier! Even in the best of marriages, there can be moments of frustration and temptation. We have to make a quality decision and plan BEFORE temptation strikes about how we are going to handle it.
If you aren’t married – hang in there. In a couple of paragraphs, this will veer out into a broader context!

I heard a pastor say once that he never, ever worries about his wife cheating on him. Not because he is so wonderful or even because of how much she loves him. He knows that her commitment to the Lord and love for Him is what governs her covenant of marriage.

I love that. [Read more…]

When Shutting Up is a Wise Choice – a look at Proverbs 4:24

 Avoid all perverse talk;
stay away from corrupt speech. Proverbs 4:24 (NLT)

When we think of perverse talk and corrupt speech, one of the first things that comes to mind is probably profanity and/or sexual innuendos. I don’t think it takes a seasoned believer to know that it doesn’t profit us or the Kingdom to speak profanely or suggestively in a sexual way. The only place for sexy talk is with our spouses.

In Ephesians 5:4, it says, “Obscene stories, foolish talk and course jokes – these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.” (NLT)

Study the Word. Find God’s thoughts and ways. Know the difference. Choose and live accordingly.

I’ve heard it said that our favorite things to talk about are our problems and other people’s faults. Ouch.
What about judgey, critical talk? [Read more…]

Because He delights in us…

I sure wish that I had always been open to the correction that I needed. I’ve missed out on some great opportunities to grow, come up higher, serve others, and experience more peace during certain seasons of my life. It is my absolute determination to receive – with joy – the correction of the Lord.

I receive correction through the Word, through the witness of the Holy Spirit to my spirit, through teaching of the Word, and through instruction of those God places in my life. A good grid for recognizing godly wisdom is to test all teaching, mentoring or wise words against the Word -making sure there is never contradiction.

It’s critical that I know the Word and study the Word and renew my mind with the Word so that I can discern what is confirmation of godly correction and what is merely advice or opinion.

Wisdom, Understanding and Clarity

Proverbs 2: 1-6 tells us that applying his words and commands and treasuring them is the key to wisdom and understanding…

My child, listen to what I say,
    and treasure my commands.
Tune your ears to wisdom,
    and concentrate on understanding.
Cry out for insight,
    and ask for understanding.
Search for them as you would for silver;
    seek them like hidden treasures.
Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,
    and you will gain knowledge of God.
For the Lord grants wisdom!
    From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Practical steps to a life of wisdom, understanding and clarity :

  • Purpose to receive.
  • Stop and think about what I am hearing from the Word.
  • Think about how it applies to everyone.
  •  Then, how it applies to me in general.
  • Then, how it applies to me specifically. Then, how it applies to whatever my current situation or circumstances are.  What the Holy Spirit is whispering to my heart.  Making it personal. That is how to receive.
  • Purpose to treasure and see as precious
  • be conscious of the value of the Word.
  • Stop and think about the fact that the Creator of everything cares about me and my life specifically and wants me to have peace, to know everything I need to know, to see clearly…to succeed at all that He has assigned me to do.

All of this is active; not passive. It isn’t going to just happen to us. We have to be intentional.

Wisdom – the Checklist

Imagine how differently areas of our lives would have played out had we operated in the wisdom of God rather than our own understanding.

Good News, Proverbs 1:2 tells us that understanding and insight are available – that we can KNOW and comprehend wisdom. We can perceive wisdom and have insight.

Proverbs 1:2 (AMP)
That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight.

Proverbs 1:2 (NKJ)
To know wisdom and instruction,
To perceive the words of understanding.

One of our greatest spiritual desires and commitments to the Lord should be that we may know skillful and godly wisdom and have great spiritual understanding and insight – AND employ and apply it in all areas of our lives. We know that God wants us to be led by the Holy Spirit in every aspect of our lives every day.

Proverbs 1 also tells us that wisdom cries out to us…it isn’t elusive or hidden. It isn’t playing hard to get.

Sounds good, right? So, how do we get more wisdom?
